A hydrostatic test allows the fire protection technician to check the extinguisher outer shell and case lining integrity. According to NFPA 10 Standards and Codes you must complete hydrostatic tests on all extinguisher cylinders every 5 to 12 years.

Napa 12 Year Hydrostatic Tests and Inspections
Getting your required 12 year tear downs on all fire extinguisher cylinders is a must. The cylinder shell casings integrity may fail at 12 years, depending on the extinguisher casing. Industrial extinguisher casings are made to last longer, but still require 5 and 12 year tests and inspections.
If it's a portable fire extinguisher it is recommended to replace the portable fire extinguisher by purchasing a new comparable unit.

Wetting Agent(s) Cylinders • Every 5 Years
AFFF Foam Cylinders • Every 5 Years
FFFP Foam Cylinders • Every 5 Years
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Cylinders • Every 5 Years
Dry Chemical(s) Cylinders • Every 12 Years
Halogenated Agent(s) Cylinders • Every 12 Years
Hose Conductivity Testing • 7.3.1.3
A conductivity test shall be conducted annually on all carbon dioxide hose assemblies.
